Making Dog Walking Safer for Pets and Others
Share
A pet parent’s responsibility does not end with the pet. They are also responsible for the society when they own a pet. Dog walking injuries have been increasing and both children and adults are victims of sprains, head trauma and fractures. Most of the times it is the pet parents that get injured and sometimes it is people who are passing by. And hence it is important to stay safe while walking the dogs. It takes a lot of focus, alertness and diligence when it comes walking a canine on leash. So, here are a few safety tips that can be followed during walk sessions.
- Always keep the pet on leash so as to avoid separation and accidents. Dogs can lose their scent in bad weather conditions.
- Use reflective gear so that the dog remains visible during the night or in low light conditions. It also helps other pedestrians and bikers identify the dog in the dark.
- Protective paw gear also keeps the paws safe from dirt, germs and tiny stones and pebbles on the road. It also keeps the home clean once they return from the walk.
- Be aware of the community and surroundings especially if it is a new area. Always stick to the same route as the dog will be able to find its way in case it gets lost. Avoid longer walks and keep them short.
- Prepare for any change in weather be it rains or wind. Avoid going out in case of storm or heavy rains. In case it is important, use protective rain gear to keep the dog from getting wet.
- Always put an identification tag on the collar with the pet’s name and contact details of the pet parent.
- Carry treats and water in case the dog gets hungry or thirsty. This is very helpful when the walks prolong due to some reason.
